Intervalle is a suite of original charcoal drawings on paper that investigates movement through the immediacy of line and mark. Each work engages gesture as record and translation, where time and motion are inscribed through the act of drawing. Ephemeral figures in mid transition are stretched, folded, and suspended, embodying the tension between stillness and motion and revealing the quiet intensity of presence.

The series is shaped by direct influences that have long informed my practice but until now have been quietly waiting in the wings. The sequential photographs of Eadweard Muybridge provided a grammar of locomotion, while Étienne Jules Marey’s chronophotographic experiments fractured time into layered exposures that prefigured stroboscopic imagery. Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending Staircase, No. 2 translated these strategies into a Cubist idiom, where movement is rendered through overlapping temporal frames. The greatest early influence has been William Kentridge’s heavily worked charcoal animations, in which each erasure bears the ghost of what came before, revealing how drawing can so eloquently describe time itself.

These references give reason to my past immersion in hand drawn animation and media works using long exposure photography, disciplines where time was revealed through the accumulation of frames and the extension of light traces. Now, in Intervalle, time is simultaneously compressed and expanded through mark; an oscillation between precision and blur exists where a focal point might be interpreted as a punctual mechanism rather than purely stylistic. Through these new works I found my own stillness and expansion.

The artworks are made using willow and compressed charcoal, with some incorporating white Conté, on Fabriano Accademia paper (200 gsm, 50 × 65 cm, acid-free, lignin-free, FSC® certified).
